Muck

A sparsely populated island of the Inner Hebrides, Muck lies 3 miles (5 km) southwest of the island of Eigg, across the Sound of Eigg to the northeast. One of the Small Isles, the others being Canna, Rum and Eigg, Muck has an area of 559 ha (1381 acres) and reaches a highest point of 137m (451 feet) at Beinn Airein to the southwest. It is the smallest and flattest of this island group. The island has been owned by the McEwen family since 1896 and is run as one large farm, with the current Laird a full-time resident of the island. Most of the other inhabitants live around the harbour of Port Mor on the southeastern coastline. The population has proved relatively stable at 29 (1961), 24 (1971), 20 (1981), 24 (1991), 30 (2001) and 27 (2011). A vehicle ferry connects the Small Isles to Mallaig on the mainland, although only resident's vehicles may land. Television presenter Paul Murton visited in 2013 during his Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands for the BBC.
