Dedridge

A southern district of Livingston in West Lothian, Dedridge lies between the town centre at Almondvale and the outlying district of Murieston. Developed around Dedridge Cottages, which were built for oil-shale workers, the neighbourhood is bisected by the Dedridge Burn. The streets are all 'Rises' and are named after titles or characters from the Waverley Novels of Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832); for example Clement Rise, Crusader Rise, Ivanhoe Rise, Mowbray Rise, Peveril Rise, Norman Rise, Quentin Rise, Ravenswood Rise and Staunton Rise. Housing here was developed between 1972 and 1982 by the Livingston Development Corporation and comprises a mix of semi-detached and terraced two-storey houses, semi-detached bungalows and maisonettes, many having been sold under right-to-buy legislation. An amount of social housing has been sold, but the remaining 750 homes for rent are now managed by West Lothian Council.

There are two community centres, a health centre and a public library, together with the James Young High School (opened 1982) and three primary schools; namely Bankton Primary School (extended 2009), Dedridge Primary School (1975) and St. Ninian's Roman Catholic Primary School (1977). Crusader Court is an assisted-living complex managed by the Trust Housing Association and there are two care homes; Woodland Nursing Home and Limecroft Residential Home.

Outside Lanthorn Community Centre, which stands on the site of the former New Farm, Livingston Town Artist Denis Barns created an art installation Three Sheep in 1978. Another of his works Standing Stones (1978) is located on Dedridge East Road in the north of the district, outside the now-demolished Lammermuir House, which was once an office block used by the Livingston Development Corporation and their successor, West Lothian Council.
