A narrow valley in the Inverness district of Highland Council Area, Glen Tarff extends south from Fort Augustus at the southwestern end of Loch Ness. One of General Wade's military roads runs along the western slopes of the wooded lower reaches of the valley, but continues south to the Corrieyairack Pass while Glen Tarff swings east. A 132 kV power line runs alongside, which will be replaced by the controversial 400 kV Beauly to Denny power line. The upper reaches of the valley narrow between steep crags, while the Glendoe Reservoir was built at the head of the valley in 2006-08. Part of the Ness Woods Special Area of Conservation lies within Glen Tarff, representing one of the best and most extensive examples of a ravine woodland in Scotland. Woodland species include alder (Alnus glutinosa), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), wych elm (Ulmus glabra) and hazel (Corylus avellana) shrub. Otter (Lutra lutra) are present alongside the River Tarff and its tributaries.
