Killantringan is a squat lighthouse on Black Head, 2 miles (3 km) north northwest of Portpatrick on the west coast of the Rhins of Galloway. Built in 1900 at a cost of £13,500 by David A. Stevenson (1854 - 1938), it comprises a white tower, 22m (72 feet) in height, although it sits on top of a cliff which increases its height to 49m (160 feet). The keepers' cottages and other associated buildings are clustered around its base. The light is 480,000 candlepower (6.033 million lumens) and has a range of 25 miles (40 km). A fog-signal was also installed, at an additional cost of £2790, although this was discontinued in 1987.
In 1982, the Craigantlet ran aground in Portamaggie just below the lighthouse. While the crew were rescued, the ship was found to be carrying a dangerous cargo of chemicals which resulted in the evacuation of Killantringan for more than six weeks and the provision of an emergency light.
Killantringan was automated in 1988 and the lightkeepers' cottages have subsequently been sold off. It is now remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters in Edinburgh.
