Langholm Bridge

The principal bridge across the River Esk in Langholm, the Langholm Bridge (or Townhead Bridge) was built between 1775-78 by Robert Hotson to provide an entrance to New Langholm. Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834) worked as a journeyman on its construction. It was widened in 1880 and strengthened and widened yet again by Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council in 1995. The bridge was re-opened by the Rt. Hon Sir Hector Monro MP (1922 - 2006) and Denis Male, the Vice-Convenor of Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council in January 1996.
