Tor Wood

An area of mixed woodland in the N of Falkirk Council Area, Tor Wood lies to the southwest of the settlement of Torwood, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Denny and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) northwest of Larbert. Once part of the King's Forest, Sir William Wallace (1274 - 1305) is said to have hidden in the Torwood Oak following the first Battle of Falkirk (1298), although this tree no longer stands. Robert the Bruce (1274 - 1329) assembled his army here a month before the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, planning their strategy and training for combat. Around 1480, the Forresters of Garden were created the hereditary keepers of the forest by King James III (1452-88), responsible for supplying the Crown with timber and good hunting.
