Threave Bridge

A fine three-span masonry bridge which conveys the A75 Trunk Road across the River Dee 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Castle Douglas in S Dumfries and Galloway. It was built 1823-25 to replace the narrow Old Bridge of Dee, situated just a quarter-mile (0.5 km) further to the southwest, and comprises three segmental arches of hammer-dressed granite with rounded cutwaters. Built to carry a realigned turnpike road, the original design was by Kenneth Mathieson, but modified before construction by the noted civil engineer James Jardine (1776 - 1858). It is 50.8m (167 feet) long and now 11m (36 feet) wide, its width having been doubled in 1986-7. This involved rebuilding the downstream face using the original masonry, strengthening the arches and installing a reinforced concrete deck. Overseen by W. A. Fairhurst & Partners and executed by Barr Ltd., their work won a Saltire Society Civil Engineering Construction Award in 1988.
