Inch

(Alloa Inch, Inch Island)

A low-lying island in the River Forth, Inch (also Alloa Inch or Inch Island) is located in Clackmannanshire a quarter-mile (0.5 km) west northwest of South Alloa and a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Alloa. The island was once farmed, but subsidence caused by nearby coal-mining has lowered the level of the land resulting in the protective embankments being breached, and the farmland being replaced by saltmarsh and reed-beds. Since 1996, the island has been managed as a reserve by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and provides popular bird-watching. The remains of farm buildings lie in the centre of the island and a pier on its eastern shore.
