One of the Lowther Hills, Broad Law rises to 510m (1673 feet) a half-mile (1 km) northeast of Leadhills in South Lanarkshire. Its slopes are scarred with the remains of old lead mines which operated until the early 20th century. A branch of the Caledonian Railway, which serviced Leadhills and Wanlockhead, curved round its southeastern slopes until it closed in 1938. The associated Risping Cleuch Viaduct, located a half-mile (0.8 km) east of the summit, was demolished in 1991 because it had become unsafe.
