The B-listed Dunfermline Central Fire Station is located on the north side of Carnegie Drive, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) north of the town centre. This modernist Art Deco-International style building was constructed 1934-6 for Dunfermline Town Council by local architect James Shearer (1881 - 1962) at a cost of £11,000. The structure comprises rectangular blocks interchanging between buff harling and blue-brown brick, with the string-courses and masonry dressings in Northumberland stone. All tall hose-drying tower rises to the rear. The building was subject to a £900,000 refurbishment and modernisation in 1986-7. It closed in 2010, replaced by a new station at Pitreavie.
