A path once favoured by the author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-94) to reach Swanston from Edinburgh, Cockmylane (or Cockmalane) rises steeply from Braidburn Valley Park, passing Comiston Spring House, between Comiston and Oxgangs, to cross Fox Spring Crescent before rising further to Caiystane Gardens. The name may originate from the Gaelic cuach na leanaidh, meaning hollow on the sloping meadow containing springs and most-likely applied to the entire area, which contains the Comiston Springs. It was later misinterpreted as a "lane" and applied to the path.
