Western Isles Hospital

A modern general hospital, located on the northern edge of Stornoway in Lewis (Outer Hebrides), the Western Isles Hospital is located next to the A857 road, a mile (1.5 km) north of the town centre. Opened in 1992, it replaced the former Lewis Hospital at Goat Hill and the County Hospital. The hospital has 212 beds, including a seven-bed day unit and a six-bed stroke rehabilitation unit, opened in 2007. Services include accident & emergency, psychiatry, geriatric medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, with specialists in other areas regularly visiting from mainland hospitals. The University of Stirling operates a campus based at the hospital for its nursing and midwifery students. Medical staff serve the whole of the Western Isles including the Uist and Barra Hospital on Benbecula.
