Oban Sponish

(Oban Spònais)

A small brackish lagoon which forms an inlet on the northern shore of Loch Eport in North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Oban Sponish (Gael: Oban Spònais) opens into Sponish Bay opposite Druim Sidinish. It represents a hollow scoured out of the gneiss bedrock by the action glaciers and later flooded by saltwater when sea levels rose after the Ice Age. Its entrance is partially blocked by a boulder sill.

The inlet forms part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designated in 1997 and comprising three rock-silled saline lagoons around Loch Eport, which each represent a distinctive marine habitat rare in Europe outside the Western Isles and Shetland.
