Broadstone Castle

(Broadstone House, Broadfield Hospital)

A substantial A-listed Scots-Baronial mansion in Inverclyde, Broadstone Castle (also known as Broadstone House) is located 2 miles (3 km) east southeast of Port Glasgow on the Old Greenock Road, and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) west northwest of Langbank. Offering fine views over the Firth of Clyde, the house was built in 1870 for local industrialist John Birkmyre (1834 - 1910), with architectural details copied from nearby Newark Castle. It comprises two storeys and an attic floor above, with a four-storey square tower, crow-stepped gables and a fine conservatory detailed in masonry and featuring a domed roof.

It served for many years as a psychiatric institution, when it was known as Broadfield Hospital, but this closed in the 1990s and the building was sold by auction in 2001. Now known as 'The Castle', its refurbishment to form the centrepiece of the Castlebank residential development began in 2001 by Muir Homes. However, in 2004, a fire reduced the house to a shell and restoration is not expected to be complete before 2010.
