Heart of Midlothian War Memorial, Haymarket

A prominent war memorial located in the centre of the major road junction at Haymarket (Edinburgh), the Hearts Memorial commemorates footballers who died in World War I. Thirteen Heart of Midlothian players enlisted in the 16th Battalion of the Royal Scots in November 1914, but only six returned. The ashlar obelisk, which incorporates a clock, was gifted to the City of Edinburgh by the club in 1922. It was the work of H.S. Gamley (1865 - 1928). It was moved slightly 1971-72 to permit road realignment and was temporarily removed and put into storage in 2009 to allow the works associated with the installation of a tram line to be completed.
