A small district of S Central Edinburgh, located between the Old Town in the N and the Meadows in the S, and Tollcross in the W and the South Side to the E. The principal street is Lauriston Place, running E-W. Both George Heriot's School (1650) and St. Thomas of Aquin's High School (1886) are located here and, in the 19th century, the Edinburgh Cattle Market lay between Lauriston Place and the West Port. From 1879, Lauriston was the site of the former Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, overlooking the Meadows, and now redeveloped for housing as the Quartermile.
