Benquhat Hill

A summit of East Ayrshire, Benquhat Hill rises to 435m (1427 feet) 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Waterside and 2½miles (4 km) north of Dalmellington. Extensive open cast coal workings lie to the southeast. The small village of Benquhat once lay on the southern slopes of the hill, constructed by the Dalmellington Iron Company in the late 19th century to house miners. It was demolished in the 1950s and the families were re-housed in new schemes at Bellsbank and Dalmellington, although its war memorial remains above the site of the village.
