Battery Point

A headland on the north side of Stornoway Harbour on the E coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Battery Point is located a half-mile (0.8 km) southeast of Stornoway town centre. A coastal battery was established here in 1876 and operated until 1919. It is now the location for Stornoway Power Station and a coastguard station. In the late 1940s a causeway was built to link Battery Point to Goat Island offshore, enclosing Newton Basin as part of the port facility. When the power station was being constructed, about the same time, two 19th century 6-inch guns were excavated on the shore. These are now mounted at the by the entrance to the power station as a memorial.
