James Clerk Maxwell Birthplace

(14 India Street)

A fine Georgian town house situated at 14 India Street in Central Edinburgh, which was the birthplace of noted physicist James Clerk Maxwell on the 13th June 1831. Constructed for his Maxwell's father in 1820 on land owned by the Heriot Trust as part of the northern extension of the New Town (the Second New Town), the builders were William and Lewis A. Wallace, who were to build 22 Street as their own home.

The house was acquired by James Clerk Maxwell Foundation in 1993, and restored to form their home and as an international centre for mathematical sciences. It also houses a small museum related to Maxwell's life and work.

The birthplace now provides an attractive and stimulating environment for mathematicians, scientists and engineers from all over the world to take part in seminars, symposia, workshops and courses.
