Hellisay


(Theiliseigh)

An uninhabited island of composed of Lewisian Gneiss in the Outer Hebrides, Hellisay (Gael: Theiliseigh) lies to the northeast of Barra and adjacent to Gighay. With an area of 142 ha (351 acres) it rises to a height of 79m (259 feet) at Meall Meadhonach which falls steeply into the sea at Hintish Bay (Gael: Bagh Shintinis). Most of the island's former inhabitants were evacuated to Eriskay in the 1840s and the island is now owned by the Scottish Ministers (the government).
