Eilean Iuvard

(Eilean Iubhaird, Eilean Lubhaird, Eilean Iubhard)

An island at the mouth of Loch Shell on the east coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Eilean Iuvard (Gael: Eilean Iubhaird or Eilean Lubhaird) lies a mile (1.5 km) south of Lemreway in the Park district. The island extends to 125 ha (309 acres) with high ground at opposite ends of the island, rising in the east to 76m (249 feet). Maintaining a small population in the past, it is today uninhabited. Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720-80) spent four days here in 1746 while attempting to escape to the continent.
