An old estate that now forms a residential district of Aberdeen, Hilton is located on a southeast facing slope, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southwest of Woodside and 2 miles (3 km) northwest of the city centre. The Hilton Estate was acquired by the city in the 1920s for housing, with a mix of social housing blocks of that period lying to the north of inter-war bungalows and later development. Quarrying for granite was undertaken here until the 19th C. Hilton House was built in 1729 but demolished in 1926 to make way for Hilton Academy. This school closed in 1988 and was itself demolished in 1991, having merging with nearby Powis Academy to create St. Machar Academy. The site redeveloped for housing c.2000 but the Bronze-Age Lang Stane remains within the grounds. Northern College developed a campus here from 1968, but this was sold off for development following the merger of the College with the University of Aberdeen in 2001.
Facilities include Hilton Community Centre, Hilton Outdoor Sport Centre and Hilton High Church.
