Sheddocksley

A small residential district of W Aberdeen, Sheddocksley is located to the west of Mastrick and the north of the Lang Stracht (the A944), 3 miles (5 km) west northwest of the city centre. Sheddocksley represents a public housing estate developed from the 1950s, along with Mastrick and then extending westwards in the 1970s to occupy the land around the former Sheddocksley House. Housing is low-rise, comprising earlier grey-rendered blocks, with later distinctive wood-boarded and white-rendered maisonettes, many now owned by their occupants under right-to-buy legislation. The later development has street names associated with Scottish islands (Orkney, Shetland, Lerwick, Barvas, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Kirkwall, Hillswick, Portree, Taransay, Uist, Eriskay, Skye, Coll, Arran, Tiree, Mull and Stroma). The name Sheddocksley has a meaning which suggests it was once a grassy place where people lived in temporary quarters in summer, most likely engaged in haymaking or dairy work. The area benefits from Kingsford Primary School, in the heart of the earlier development, a Community Centre on Sumburgh Crescent and a Baptist Church built in 2004 on Eday Walk. Sheddocksley Sports Centre is located to the northeast on Springhill Road.
