South Breakwater (Old)

Extending north into the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour, a half-mile (0.5 km) east of Footdee, the Old South Breakwater remains as a stump having been replaced by a new South Breakwater a quarter-mile (0.4 km) to the east in 1873. Built in 1812 by Aberdeen Harbour Board's resident engineer, John Gibb (1776 - 1850), with advice from Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834), it once extended to 244m (800 feet) in length, but was shortened by 152m (500 feet) when the new structure was completed.
