Kemps Castle

(Kemp's Castle)

Kemps Castle is an Iron-Age complex occupying the summit of Turin Hill 1½ miles (2.5 km) south southwest of Aberlemno in E Central Angus. It comprises two sizeable hill-forts and two, or possibly three, stone roundhouses (or 'duns'), representing different phases of occupation over a lengthy period. The oldest fort extends to 274m (898 feet) by 122m (400 feet) and is enclosed by a double rampart which reaches 2.5m (8 feet) in height, but is now incomplete. The second fort is smaller and single-walled, while the duns are approximately 30m (98 feet) in diameter. Also known as Kemp's Castle, the name may derive from Camps Castle. There are also several small millstone quarries which probably date from Mediaeval times.
