A remote uninhabited island in the Atlantic Ocean, Rona (also referred to as North Rona, Gael: Ronaidh) lies 10 miles (16 km) east of Sula Sgeir and 44 miles (71 km) northeast of the Butt of Lewis. It has an area of 209 ha (269 acres) and rises to 108m (354 feet) at Toa Rona. St. Ronan's Chapel is one of the oldest buildings of the Celtic Church. At one time it was occupied by a single family, the last member of which left the island in 1844. Today Rona is grazed by sheep. It is a designated National Nature Reserve and a breeding place for Atlantic grey seal. The island hosts an automatic light beacon, remotely monitored by the Northern Lighthouse Board.
