Burifa' Hill

A low summit at the northern end of the Dunnet Head peninsula in N Caithness, Burifa' Hill rises to 115m (377 feet) 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Brough. A radio navigation station was erected on the summit during World War II, designed to be at the centre of the northern section of a network which guided bombers to their targets in continental Europe. This station operated from late 1942 until March 1946, initially part of the 'Gee' system but later updated to use 'LORAN'. Considerable evidence of the facility remains, including the remnants of transmitter blocks, gun emplacements and a camp built to accommodate the personnel responsible for operating the station and for its defence. Auxiliary stations were located on the Ward of Scousburgh (Shetland), Windyheads Hill (Aberdeenshire) and Sangomore (Sutherland).
