Forbes of Newe Obelisk

A large obelisk located in the grounds of the Royal Cornhill Hospital, a mile (1.5 km) northwest of the centre of Aberdeen, the Forbes of Newe Obelisk was fashioned in 1830 by John Smith (1781 - 1852). The pink granite ashlar monument commemorates John and Charles Forbes of Newe, and the building of the new Royal Cornhill Asylum. John had left £10,000 towards the new hospital. The obelisk was originally located in St. Nicholas kirkyard but moved here in 1838 by Archibald Simpson (1790 - 1847). It was C-listed in 1984.
