Persephone Statue

This fine statue of Persephone is located in woodland near the entrance to Crowmallie House, a mile (1.5 km) west northwest of Chapel of Garioch in Aberdeenshire. Carved from an 8.5-ton block of millstone grit, the statue was carved in 1961 by Sandy Smith who lived at Crowmallie House. The sensual statue recalls Indian art and carries a hand-mirror an allusion to a similar mirror on the Maiden Stone, a Pictish cross-slab located by the roadside a short distance to the east.
