Hoy

(North Hoy)

One of three divisions of the island of Hoy in Orkney, Hoy occupies the northern part of the island and, in an attempt to distinguish the name of the district from the name of the island, is sometimes erroneously referred to as North Hoy. The name arises because the island was once divided into the parishes of Hoy & Graemsay and Walls & Flotta, hence the northern part of the island was described simply as 'Hoy'. Hoy Community Centre, Hoy Church and Hoy Outdoor Centre are located together in the northeast of the island in a settlement sometimes also referred to as Hoy.
