A summit at the western end of the Gleniffer Braes in S Central Renfrewshire, Walls Hill rises to 230 m (754 feet) 1¼ miles (2 km) southeast of Howwood. Low cliffs surround the summit plateau which extends to 488m (1600 feet) by 213m (700 feet). This area was protected by an earthen embankment to create an immense hill-top settlement in Iron Age times. Excavations in 1956 and later years revealed the foundations of circular timber-walled huts, one of which was the source of Early Iron Age pottery. This is thought to have been the capital of the Damnonii tribe during Roman times, their territory extending across the Midland Valley towards Stirling.
