Balsalloch Hill

A summit on the South Ayrshire coast, Balsalloch Hill rises steeply to 187m (613 feet) to the south of Carleton, a half-mile (1 km) southwest of Lendalfoot. Carleton Hill, with its ancient earthwork, lies on its northeastern flank. The unusual dark-coloured rocks here are serpentinite and represent part of the Ballantrae ophiolite complex, a preserved slice of ocean crust trapped between colliding continents 450 million years ago.
