A steep little summit which overlooks the Firth of Clyde from South Ayrshire, Dow Hill (pronounced Doo Hill) rises to 159m (521 feet) 1¼ miles (2 km) south southeast of the centre of Girvan. A popular path reaches the top, having traversed along a craggy ridge, which gives fine views across the town and out to Ailsa Craig and Arran. On the summit are the remains of a hill-fort, with low walls to the east and west but undefended from the north and south due to the precipitous nature of the slopes. Within these defences is a possible dun, around 15.5m (51 feet) by 11.5m (38 feet) internally, but now considerably robbed of its stone. The structure would seem to be atypical for fortifications in this area.
