River Dee at Threave

A river of Dumfries and Galloway, the River Dee rises in Loch Dee to the east of Glentrool. It flows nearly 19 miles (31 km) southeastwards through Clatteringshaws Loch and the smaller Stroan Loch before entering Loch Ken opposite Parton. The river continues southwards from Loch Ken for another 15 miles (24 km), flowing past Threave Castle to Kirkcudbright and on into Kirkcudbright Bay. It has a total course from its source of just over 38 miles (61 km). In its upper reaches before reaching Loch Ken, its dark waters have also given rise to it being named the Black Water of Dee.
