Strath Naver

(Srath Nabhair)

A broad, fertile valley in N Sutherland, Strathnaver (Gael: Srath Nabhair) carries the water of the River Naver 19 miles (31 km) north from the foot of Loch Naver to the sea at Torrisdale Bay to the west of Bettyhill. Once heavily populated, the strath was systematically cleared of population by the Sutherland Estate between 1807 and 1822 to make way for sheep farms. The Rosal township, cleared in 1816 and excavated in the 1960s under the direction of Dr Horace Fairhurst, is interpreted on site by Forestry and Land Scotland.
