Glen Cannich

A sizeable, remote and sparsely-populated valley within the Inverness district of Highland Council Area, Glen Cannich carries the waters of the River Cannich east, flowing through Loch Mullardoch, to merge with the River Glass. Loch Mullardoch was enlarged by flooding a significant area of the glen as part of the Affric-Beauly Hydro-Electric Power Scheme. A road extends half-way up the glen, as far as the Mullardoch dam, 8 miles (13 km) west of the village of Cannich. The road passes the smaller Loch a' Bhana, Loch Sealbhanach, Loch Carrie and Loch Craskie, which are expansions of the River Cannich. A semi-tame female puma was trapped here in 1980, generating a tabloid frenzy. Its origins remain unknown, but it lived out the remainder of its life in the Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig and was displayed in Inverness Museum after its death.
