Hill of Stake

The Hill of Stake is a peak located on the border between North Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, in the heart of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Largs. It rises to a height of 522m (1712 feet), its summit marked by an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar installed in 1936. Two aircraft have crashed on this hill. A Spartan Cruiser aircraft crashed on the hill in 1938. The crew survived and the fuselage was later recovered and is now on show at the Museum of Flight in East Lothian. In 1947, a Supermarine Seafire crashed on a flight from Donibristle (Fife) to Northern Ireland, killing the pilot, Sub-Lieutenant John Knight.
