A picturesque little bay on the north side of Bennane Head in South Ayrshire, Balcreuchan Port lies below steep bluffs and is accessible either by sea or via a steep path which descends from the A77 Trunk Road. On the north side of the bay is Sawney Bean's Cave. The bay gives its name to the Balcreuchan Group, unusual rocks which represent the upper part of a section of ocean crust pinched between colliding continents in Ordovician times. Forming part of the Ballantrae ophiolite complex, these include sedimentary rocks, brecchias and pillow lavas, erupted from undersea volcanoes.
