Forming a shop frontage on Innerleithen's High Street, Robert Smail's Printing Works is maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. Was a printing works and stationers from 1847 - 1985. Today the buildings are preserved much as they were at in late Victorian times, with an office, paper store, composing and press rooms. The presses were originally powered by a water-wheel located in a lade underneath the building. Machinery preserved includes a Columbian handpress, a Wharfdale Reliant flatbed, two Falcon platens, a Heidelberg automatic platen (from 1953) and a treadle Arab.
The buildings include an important historic archive which give an insight into the town of Innerleithen, including photographs, copies of a weekly newspaper published between 1893 and 1916 and log books recording every job printed over the time the works operated.
