A sea loch on the east coast of the Kintyre peninsula, East Loch Tarbert forms a small inlet of Loch Fyne. The village of Tarbert, which is linked by ferry to Portavadie in the summer, lies at the head of the loch. To the southwest is the much longer West Loch Tarbert which separates Kintyre from Knapdale. Legend has it that Magnus Barelegs, son of King Olaf of Norway, had his men drag his ship across the narrow isthmus between East and West Loch Tarbert in 1098, enabling him to claim that Kintyre was an island and therefore a Viking possession.
