Loch Gruinart

A shallow sea-loch on the northwest coast of the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, Loch Gruinart is situated 6 miles (10 km) north northwest of Bowmore. It is 4 miles (6.5 km) in length and a mile (1.5 km) wide. A few houses and some good farmland lie around its shores, but no significant settlements. Large areas of sand are exposed within the loch at low tide and there are extensive dune systems behind Ardnave Point and Killinallan Point at the mouth of the loch, while a salt marsh lies as its head. Significant numbers of wintering geese roost and feed in the vicinity of the loch and these are protected within the Loch Gruinart Nature Reserve.
