Dunnet Bay

A significant bay on the north coast of Caithness in Highland Council Area, Dunnet Bay lies 6 miles (10 km) east northeast of Thurso. The bay is 2 miles (3 km) wide and 4 miles (5 km) deep, with a broad sandy beach - one of the longest in Scotland - lying between the cliffs of Dunnet Head and rocks which run along the coast to Murkle Bay. The village of Castleton lies on the southern shore of the bay, while the smaller settlement of Dunnet is located on its northern shore. A large and well-developed dune system lies behind the beach, with a caravan and camping site located at Links of Dunnet. The area is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) owing to its considerable geomorphological and ecological interest.
