Lanrick

(Lanrick Castle)

The former family seat of the Haldanes, controversially demolished in 2002, Lanrick Castle lay close to the River Teith, 4 miles (6 km) northwest of Doune in Stirling Council Area. The estate was bought by William Jardine (1784 - 1843) in the 1830s and it was he who built the house. For a short time in the 19th Century the house was known as Clan Gregor Castle and within the policies the MacGregor Monument, consisting of a tree built in dressed stone capped by a Doric rotunda, can still be found.
