Located in the southwest corner of the Mounth plateau, Glas Maol lies on the border of Angus, Aberdeenshire and Perth & Kinross Council Areas, although its summit, which reaches 1068m (3504 feet), is located within Angus. Classified as a Munro, its name is derived from the Gaelic for 'green-grey bare hill' which is appropriate since it appears as a large bald dome. Its summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar installed in
1936 for the re-triangulation of Great Britain. A ski tow associated with the Glenshee Ski Centre descends from its northern slopes.
