Siccar Point and Fast Castle Head

A rocky peninsula on the North Sea coast of the Scottish Borders, Siccar Point juts into the sea east of Cockburnspath and Pease Bay. It is well known to geologists for its angular unconformity, a feature first recognised by the noted Scottish geologist James Hutton (1726-97). The fact that rock strata laid down 425 million years ago could appear in a younger sequence laid down 345 million years ago led Hutton to the conclusion that the earth was not made in six days and that faulting and folding were important processes in the evolution of the landscape.
