A significant arrowhead-shaped peninsula, district and former parish forming the easternmost section of the Orkney mainland, Deerness lies 9 miles (14 km) east of Kirkwall. The peninsula is separated from the bulk of the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus between St. Peter's Pool and Taracliff Bay.
