Princes Square

Originally an open courtyard between Buchanan Street and Queen Street, Princes Square was designed by John Baird in 1843. The owner, Sir James Campbell (1790 - 1876), was Lord Provost of Glasgow (1840-43). In celebration of the birth of the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII, he named the development Princes Square.

Re-opening in 1988, the B-listed Square was transformed by Hugh Martin and Partners in conjunction with 'The Design Solution', renovation work allowing most of the original walls to remain. The resulting glass enclosed courtyard is as much a space for walking and socialising as it is a place for shopping, with bars and restaurants occupying the top and basement levels and several famous-name designers the intermediary levels.
