Located 2 miles (3 km) north of Penicuik in Midlothian, the Glencorse Barracks date from 1803, when they were first used to hold prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars before being bought outright from the private estate on which they stood (1812). The only surviving building from that time is the former Guardroom, which is now the clock-tower. A memorial gateway to the Royal Scots Regiment marks the entrance to the Barracks. The buildings were re-opened by the Princess Royal after a modernisation in 1964 and re-opened once again by Defense Secretary Dr. John Reid in 2006 after a £60-million rebuilding programme.
The barracks is now the headquarters of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
