Aberdour Castle

Lying just to the south of the centre of the village of Aberdour in S Fife and overlooking the Firth of Forth, Aberdour Castle comprises a ruined keep with relatively complete later ranges to the east. It was in the possession of the Mortimer family and later passed to Thomas Randolph, the Earl of Moray (d.1332) and then to the Douglas Earls of Morton in 1342. It comprises a 13th century E-plan tower house with later extensions which date from the 16th and 17th centuries. The East Range includes a long gallery and a fine painted ceiling. The grounds include a 16th-century beehive doocot, a well, gardens and walled terraces. It passed into state care in 1924. In 1725, the Douglas family moved to nearby Aberdour House, which was formerly known as Cuttlehill.

The castle served as a location for the monastery scenes in the successful American television series Outlander (2015).
