Fetlar Interpretive Centre

Situated in Houbie on the island of Fetlar in Shetland, the Fetlar Interpretive Centre is a community-run museum and visitor centre which houses a series of displays on local history, culture, crafts, crofting and the sea. Interpretation is through archive material, with supplementary recordings of storytelling, music and early film. Displays also include the archaeology and natural history of the island, together with information on Sir William Watson Cheyne (1852 - 1932), a noted surgeon who began as an assistant to Lord Lister (1827 - 1912). Archaeological material includes a record of the visit of Channel 4 television's Time Team and their work on a Norse house at Gord and the Giant's Grave, a rare Viking Ship burial at Aith. Natural history displays include information on wild flowers, birds, wildlife and geology.

Open from May until September, the Centre also holds an archive, with a large digitised collection photographs and documents, and a genealogical database. It produces its own publications and is run by the Fetlar Museum Trust.
